Your body has a natural rhythm, and your menstrual cycle is its guide. This isn’t solely about periods or cravings; it’s a blueprint for balance and self-care. By understanding each phase of your cycle, you can work with your body, not against it—boosting your energy, creativity, and well-being.
The art of cycle syncing for your menstrual cycle is about honoring your body’s wisdom. It’s science, self-love, and empowerment wrapped into one. Let’s explore how you can thrive through every phase.
The Four Phases of Your Menstrual Cycle
Your menstrual cycle is divided into four unique phases, each bringing its own energy, challenges, and opportunities. Here’s how you can support yourself through each one, so let's get started!
Menstrual Phase: Rest & Reflection

What’s Happening: This is the start of your cycle. Your body starts to shed the uterine lining, leaving you tired, introspective, or even moody. Hormone levels (estrogen and progesterone) are at their lowest.
How to Support Yourself:
Move Mindfully: Swap intense workouts for restorative yoga or gentle stretching. This was the biggest change for me, when I started leaning into resting, this cycle became much easier for me. Now, if you feel like you can move intensively - do it! But rest is just as productive as movement, just a reminder.
Nourish Deeply: Focus on warming, iron-rich foods like soups, stews, and leafy greens. I get lightheaded from low iron, so double up and grab iron supplements (with Vitamin D added) to help.
Reflect & Reset: Use this phase for journaling and intention-setting. Ask yourself: What can I release to make space for the new? What keeps coming up that needs my focus?
NMW Menstrual Tip: Carve out quiet time. Even 15 minutes of stillness can feel transformative. This is a time to reflect, so you deserve to do things that feel extra good. Grab that chocolate bar, binge-watch your favorite Netflix show, and sip some tea, boo!

Follicular Phase: Energy & Creativity
What’s Happening: After your period ends, estrogen begins to rise, giving you a natural energy boost. This is a great time for brainstorming and initiating new projects.
How to Support Yourself:
Move Actively: Try strength training, cycling, or cardio — your body is ready to move!
Fuel Creativity: Incorporate vibrant, nutrient-packed foods like fresh salads, berries, and avocado. This is the time to fuel your body with nourishing foods. Don't know where to start? Here are some smoothie recipes that'll help!
Dream Big: Plan your month, set goals, and lean into fresh ideas. This is the perfect phase for brainstorming and creating.
NMW Follicular Tip: Start a vision board or mind map for a goal you’ve been dreaming about. The sky’s the limit! You already have Pinterest, might as well maximize the time spent on the app to do some good, right?

Ovulatory Phase: Connection & Confidence
What’s Happening: This is the peak of your cycle. Estrogen is at its highest, and testosterone rises too, boosting your mood, energy, and charisma. This is your most social and magnetic phase. Think goddess energy, because that is exactly what is happening from within.
How to Support Yourself:
Move Powerfully: Push your limits with high-energy movement, cycle, HIIT, swimming, or have a dance party in your room.
Nourish Lightly: Incorporate lean proteins, raw veggies, and antioxidant-rich snacks. Think homemade chipotle bowls, veggies + hummus (or ranch).
Show Up: Plan social events, pitch that big idea, or record content — you’re radiating confidence. Use this energy to supercharge your goals, not pour into having sex with some dude who is an energy vampire. Your energy deserves better, girl. And that's real!
NMW Ovulation Tip: Use this phase to connect with your community. Schedule coffee dates, collaborations, or even a fun yoga class with friends.

Luteal Phase: Slow & Soothe
What’s Happening: Progesterone takes center stage, preparing your body for a potential pregnancy. Energy levels may dip, and you may feel more emotional or fatigued.
How to Support Yourself:
Move Gently: Choose Pilates, restorative yoga, or leisurely walks. This is not the time to start that run club, maybe book club is a better choice?
Comfort Yourself: Enjoy grounding foods like roasted vegetables, sweet potatoes, and herbal teas.
Simplify: Focus on tying up loose ends rather than starting new projects.
NMW Luteal Tip: Practice self-compassion. Acknowledge your feelings, and permit yourself to rest without guilt. If you start to get irritable, make sure you are upfront with those around you about your cycle and schedule alone time accordingly. We all get grumpy, but nobody deserves a luteal tongue-lashing.
Why Cycle Syncing Matters - The Science Behind The Phases
Cycle syncing isn’t about forcing your life into strict patterns—it’s about flowing with the rhythm your body naturally provides. By leaning into each phase, you’re not just caring for your health; you’re deepening your relationship with yourself in the most intuitive, empowering way.
This practice is a gentle rebellion against the hustle culture that asks us to ignore our needs. Your body wasn’t designed to be in constant overdrive—it thrives in cycles of energy and rest. Honoring these rhythms allows you to live with more ease, alignment, and grace. Nature gave you this roadmap for a reason; all you need to do is trust it.
And if anyone dares to rush you? Channel your inner power, give them a knowing smile, and take the nap you so deeply deserve. BLOOD SHOUTOUT: The Agenda Period is a women-owned period tracking app that understands each cycle, is free to download, and shifts the narrative about women's health. You can download the app here, or visit their website here.
